Ohio Men Sentenced for Roles in Identity Theft Scheme
BECKLEY, WV—Teddy Davis, 25, of Columbus, Ohio, was sentenced by United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston to two years in prison for aggravated identity theft. Bryan Hoffman, 20, of Dublin, Ohio, was sentenced by Judge Johnston to a maximum of six months of home confinement and three years supervised release for mail fraud. Davis and Hoffman pled guilty in December 2008, admitting they drove through four states (Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia) stealing mail. While staying in a hotel in Beckley, West Virginia, they applied for credit in the names of the victims. The credit cards were sent to the hotel at the same address. The FBI was alerted by a victim who received a credit alert. The FBI, along with the Beckley Police Department, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, went to the hotel, finding hundreds of pieces of stolen mail, as well as a computer. None of the credit cards had been activated. The fraudulent cards had a total credit limit or potential loss of $70,000. AUSA Erik Goes handled the prosecution.
