FORMER DEACON SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR STEALING CHURCH FUNDS

United States Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan announced today, May 21, 2008, that Euthumn Napier, a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to fifteen months of incarceration and three years of supervised release on his conviction of Mail Fraud.

United States District Judge David S. Cercone imposed the sentence on Napier, age 66.

According to information presented to the court by Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway, Napier was a Deacon at the Allegheny Alliance Church in charge of a benevolent fund reserved for people in need.  By submitting fraudulent forms that included fictitious names, Napier, over a three-year period, fraudulently diverted approximately $100,000 from the benevolent fund to pay his personal bills.

Ms. Buchanan commended the Financial Crimes Task Force of Southwestern Pennsylvania for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Napier.  The Financial Crimes Task Force of Southwestern Pennsylvania is comprised of United States Postal Inspectors, Special Agents of the United States Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Investigators from the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office, and Detectives from Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh.
